And even when they do, it can be hard to speak directly to someone in that letter because you’re not sure who you’re even talking to. It just feels so impersonal. On top of that, when you apply for a job through an online portal, especially if it’s with a mid- to large-size company, chances are that your resume and cover letter aren’t even going to be read reviewed by a human first. They’re going to be reviewed by software that’s designed to find the so-called best matched candidates. And you’re only going to move on to the human eyeballs if you are among these best matched candidates. So there’s all kinds of less than ideal going on with this scenario. Number one, you could spend time and effort creating a smashing cover letter and then not even make it through the automated scanning process. So you are correct in this instance. No one is going to read it. Number two, computers don’t tend to appreciate that involves emotional appeal. Computers are simply looking for keywords and credentials. That said, your efforts may be underappreciated and ineffective. Number three, these systems tend to treat the cover letter as an afterthought. So your opportunity to grab them at hello could be notably compromised. It’s like you’re playing a game of job search roulette.
